Sabbath

I really like the way the New Living Translation puts these verses:
"They must realize that the Sabbath is the Lord's gift to you. That is why he gives you a two-day supply on the sixth day, so there will be enough for two-days. On the Sabbath day you much each stay in your place. Do not go out to pick up food on the seventh day."

There are a couple of observations that strike me. First I love that this translation uses the word "gift" to describe the Sabbath. In the time of Jesus the Sabbath was viewed as a burden and maybe some people look at it that way today, as some kind of way for God to keep us from making money, but that is such a perversion of its original intention. The Sabbath is a gift from God to us. It gives us permission to rest from our work, which is so hard for some of us. What I also notice about this verse is that it occurs prior to God giving Moses the Ten Commandments which He will do in just a few chapters. It talks nothing about going to temple (there wasn't one yet) or the tabernacle (it is coming soon) or to church (not for another few thousand years) God is just telling these people who have been working as slaves for 400 years with no rest that they now have permission to rest one day a week and God will make sure their needs are provided for. It is a gift, but also a test of faith in God. They get the gift and they grow in their relationship with God. I think Sabbath is still that for us today.
