Resurrection Sunday

Last Sunday we had a great day at Mount Hope, as I am sure was the case at most churches. There is something special about Resurrection Sunday. There is the anticipation leading up to it, Holy week in the few days prior to Sunday and for many a lenten fast even prior to that. By the time the Palm leaf from the previous Sunday is all dried out and we have contemplated the cross on Good Friday we have a great expectation of something great. One of the reasons I love Resurrection Sunday is because the creation itself participates in preparation for the service (at least in the northern hemisphere this is the case). The last of the snow banks have melted away, the days are lasting a little longer, the grass is beginning to pick itself up from being matted under the weight of the winter's snow, the iris leaves begin to poke through the ground but the daffodils beat them to it as their yellow heads rise and point towards the sun. It is as if everything toegether is just shouting "Do it God, do something great, you show them, bring death from life, bring joy from all the pain, do it God." It is a preachers dream. By the time the service begins that resurrection Sunday I know not whether to preach or just look to God and say "Encore, Encore!" (Do it again Lord) And so we preachers do a little of both, we preach about what God has done and we look for Him to do it again as we pray that those spiritally dead will experience a resurrection on that day.

As special and sacred as resurrection Sunday is in our calendar, the good news of Jesus is that the resurrection power that raised Christ from the dead is alive and available to us not just on one day, but everyday.
