David & Anna Hymes:

We had been pastoring a church in Massachusetts when we began to see that God was leading us into missions rather than ministry in the U.S. We began the process of joining Assemblies of God World Missions in 1987 and in 1989 we were on our way. We arrived in Japan in 1990, the place where David was born and raised, and began our work with the Bible School and ministry in churches. In 2005 we left Japan and went to the Philippine Islands and worked at the Asia Pacific Theological Seminary for about 4 years. In April 2009 we returned to Japan.

When we arrived back in Japan in 2009, David went back to working at Central Bible College (CBC) Tokyo as teacher and dorm supervisor. Currently he is Academic Dean as well as professor at the school. Anna is teaching elementary school at the Christian Academy in Japan. We also accepted the pastorship of Tsukuba International Christian Church, so we have been working with students as well as the church. Our church is 1/3 Japanese people, 1/3 people who come from developing countries in order to study in Japan on a scholarship basis, and 1/3 ex-pats. We have received such encouragement from this ministry and feel that God is going to use this church to bring many into his kingdom. Our vision is to grow this church as a place where people can get saved and join a community of believers who encourage one another in a community of faith. The services are conducted in both English and Japanese. David preaches in both languages and is able to reach both English speaking and Japanese speaking groups.

The vision, dream and hope of all missionaries is to see people of their adopted country come alongside and minister. We encourage the people in the church to be involved and step into ministry themselves. We also work closely with the Bible School in training and developing ministers who will plant churches and expand God’s kingdom. Training, preaching, teaching – are all methods we hope and pray will be instrumental in raising up Japanese believers to take the Gospel to others in this country who don’t know the Lord.

Japan is a very difficult field – the percentage of Christian believers is less than 1%. People are prosperous and seem to feel very little need for God. However, there is a great deal of hopelessness that has become part of the fabric of society. The message of the Gospel is designed to bring hope to the hopeless. A miracle of God’s grace will take place and some day Japanese people themselves will be sending out missionaries to other countries.
