January Ministry Spotlight - Children's Ministry

Mike and Ashley King have always had a passion to serve in children’s ministry. That passion led Mike to work as a Principal at Twin City Christian School in Lundberg, Massachusetts and receive his Masters in Seminary from Liberty University, and for Ashley to develop her teaching talent at Merrimack Valley Montessori School in Salem, New Hampshire. Today, the husband and wife co-lead the children’s ministry at Mount Hope Christian Center.

“Our vision is to create a fun and creative environment for kids where we are intentional about the Gospel of Christ,” said Mike.

The Kings have been at Mount Hope Christian School for almost a year. Mike has been in his role as Chaplin, and athletic director since March. Meanwhile, Ashley has been an art teacher at the school. In July the dynamic duo, and parents of two young boys, took on another role in ministry - Mike is the director of Children’s Ministries and Ashley is the assistant children’s ministry leader.

And as if they cannot get enough, Ashley is a God’s Girls Leader on Tuesday afternoons, a STARS assistant on Wednesday nights, and Mike leads God’s Guys.

“For us we have a ton of fun doing this work together,” shared Ashley. “We sometimes have just as much fun as the kids. It really draws us together.”

“It’s a very good working relationship where we can draw on each other’s strengths,” added Mike. “It was a natural progression of seeing doors that God was opening, and walking through those doors. We are very humbled to be able to call this our job.”

New Year, New Theme
In mid-December, the Kings kicked off “The Big Splash Discovery” where they will lead the children this year through answering 13 big questions about God like is God real, is God true, and is God loving.

“We transformed the whole Children’s church room into a beach scene,” said Ashley. “We spent a lot of time for the kids to be in their own world; so that they can be intrigued and inquisitive about what they are learning.”

“We are in the process of developing several visuals to help kids see and remember the word of God,” explained Mike. “Such props include a time machine, new puppet theater, Ezekiel’s wheel, several worship songs and skits, student led worship, games, and props. We also started to do learning centers where we’ve been able to present specifically to K through second grade students and third through fifth grade students. Every Sunday there are two separate sessions, which incorporates a game or craft.”

“Currently, nursery through preschool needs lead teachers and assistants,” said Mike. “Our preference is that volunteers would commit to an entire school year. We will also welcome people who are willing to commit to even one month or be put on the on call list. The most pressing need right now is registration volunteers for both services.”
